A Typical Day At A Part-Time Job As Told By “The Office”

By Victoria Robertson on August 27, 2015

Part-time jobs are an absolute drag. We usually hate them, we either have far too many hours or not nearly enough, and most of the time, our co-workers do nothing but annoy us.

Plus, part-time jobs don’t typically have anything to do with our chosen career paths, but are instead a filler used to pay bills and buy alcohol as our student loans we’re pretending don’t exist pile up on the coffee table.

But part-time jobs aren’t all bad. I mean sure, we don’t love them, but I think it’s safe to say we’ve learned a lot while working them. And for those of you that have never worked a day in your life, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. But don’t worry, I’ll fill you in.

So without further ado, here is a typical day at a part-time job as told by “The Office.”

1. You walk in and are immediately in a bad mood.

The first step you take into that building feels like absolute disappointment mixed with three cups of annoyance and a teaspoon of anxiety.

Yay work.

2. You go straight for caffeine.

It doesn’t matter if you start in the morning, mid-day or have the night shift; physically going to work when you have absolutely no desire to do so is the definition of exhaustion.

3. It takes too long to kick in.

Despite your best efforts, the caffeine doesn’t work nearly as quickly as you’d like it to, and your first communication with any human being probably doesn’t go as well as it should.

4. You take out your annoyance in a self-reflective rant.

I mean, if people weren’t so stupid, you wouldn’t be so annoyed, right? Exactly.

5. You mindlessly go about the first half of your shift.

Albeit, with a little bit of attitude.

6. You can’t stop looking at the clock.

Stop looking. It’s only been five minutes. You’ll just be disappointed.

7. A completely foreseeable (but still, extremely interesting) coworker argument breaks out.

I hear Sarah and Samantha have been fighting all week and now Amber is mad at both of them. It’s stupid, but you’re trying not to look at the clock again, so you might as well tune in.

8. The fight isn’t nearly as dramatic as you wanted.

Awesome.

9. Your coworkers that missed it don’t leave you alone.

It was a stupid fight, nothing happened. Stop asking!

10. The caffeine finally kicks in.

Better late than never, I guess?

11. You get hungry.

If part-time jobs would provide food at hourly intervals, that’d be great.

12. You eventually get some work done.

You need to take your mind off the hunger somehow, right?

13. A customer was rude to you.

But you let it slide. Because you have to. Sadly.

14. The clock sped up while you were busy.

Only two hours left! Thank you for finally helping me out, time.

15. A friend texts you to hang out.

And that’s when you realize this terrible job is the reason you have no social life.

16. Caffeine wears off.

Which means you are no longer even remotely productive.

17. You need to have a pointless meeting with your boss.

So you basically just sit there and try not to fall asleep.

18. He creeps you out in said meeting.

So creepy.

19. You contemplate quitting.

It’s a serious thought on more than one occasion. And you know what, maybe today is the day …

20. You realize you don’t have enough money to quit.

But today is not that day.

21. It’s quitting time.

Clock out, grab your stuff and dance your way out the door.

22. The only person at work you like comes in … as you’re leaving.

You’ll probably never work the same shift.

23. You practically run to the car.

No way you’re getting stuck here for another minute.

24. You turn on your post-work pick-me-up song.

Whatever works.

25. You realize you work again tomorrow.

But it won’t. It never stops.

It’s a sad story, but true. Part-time jobs eat up most of your time, do nothing but annoy you and you dread having to work all day long.

But hey, at least you’ve got a minimum wage income to toss into your sad excuse for a bank account.

It’s a vicious circle but what are you gonna do?
