10 Reasons You Should Give Greek Life A Chance

By Alexandra Brown on September 29, 2014

As an incoming freshman, you will most likely be presented with the question of whether or not to join Greek life, assuming your school has fraternities and sororities.

Although you may have already met a set group of friends, or you think you’d be better off on campus being independent and not belonging to any specific organization, there are definitely some pros to think about when considering whether or not to join Greek life.

1. To have the cliché college experience.

You’ve most likely seen all the recent movies attempting to depict college life, and although these aren’t all completely accurate, it’s safe to say that joining a fraternity/sorority will get you a lot closer to what you saw in that movie last weekend.

Joining Greek life means a lot of partying, going out and having a good time. Who wouldn’t want to participate?

2. To meet a lot of new people.

Right off the bat when joining a house, you’re introduced to crazy amounts of new people, either in your class, or in classes above you. And this is in addition to the people you already met during rush.

Even though you may meet people you’re not absolutely fond of, your fraternity/sorority may be the place where you meet friends that you’ll have for the rest of your life. Why close yourself off to this experience?

3. To make campus feel smaller.

No matter how big your high school graduating class was, you’re most likely going to be overwhelmed with the student body on your new college campus. Joining a fraternity/sorority allows that campus to feel smaller because you’re constantly meeting new people, and as a result, are not isolating yourself.

Having a big house to come home to, whether it’s a fraternity house or sorority house, can also make you feel like you have a home on campus away from home.

4. To form networks for future jobs/careers.

If you decide to take part in Greek life, as stated before, you’re going to be meeting a lot of new people constantly. As a result of this, you’re bound to meet people in your same major, or people who have similar plans for their careers/jobs after graduation.

These new relationships can serve as your first professional networks, which will undoubtedly be of use later on.

5. To participate in themed parties/exchanges.

If you are a creative person who loves dressing up for different themes/decorating for parties, Greek life would certainly be enjoyable for you. There are always different themed parties going on, as well as more formal exchanges, so if you loved homecoming, and other themed events in high school, you will definitely enjoy these events in college.

6. To feel like you’re a part of something.

It is very easy to be initially overwhelmed with how big and new your campus is, so joining Greek life is a good way to feel like you belong somewhere.

7. To take on leadership positions.

If you’re the type of person who is always looking for a new leadership role, joining Greek life would be a great place to start. Within most houses, positions of philanthropy chair, recruitment head, president and many others are available.

You would have not only important responsibilities, but also the power of being in charge of issues that directly affect you and the people you care about.

8. To own a large amount of new apparel.

Upon joining a house, you will be showered with numerous new clothing items, from tank tops to rain jackets to t-shirts that will contain your new letters. If you didn’t feel a part of anything on campus, you definitely will after this.

9. To form relationships with helpful mentors.

With the “big” and “little” buddy system, you will be paired up with an upperclassman that will serve as someone to answer your questions, guide you and even be one of your role models on campus. These relationships can also last for quite some time.

10. To carry on the family legacy.

The last reason to get involved in Greek life is because maybe someone, or multiple people in your family, were members of the same sorority/fraternity, and you joining would make everyone so proud. Why not?

If you are an incoming freshman and are questioning whether to join any organizations on campus, or which ones to join, hopefully the above reasons can convince you that going Greek will not be a disappointment.

Just like there are usually counterarguments regarding mostly every decision we make, they exist for joining Greek life as well. However, there are plenty of reasons to give Greek life a chance on your campus.

After all, there won’t be another opportunity to take part in something like this after college. You may as well make the most of where you are!
