Books Every College Student Must Read

By Alison Keim on March 28, 2014

As college students we spend a lot of time with our heads buried into our textbooks. A recent study done by College Magazine has revealed that the number of college students who read for fun is significantly decreasing every year. Newsflash college students: not all books are textbooks, and not all books are scary! There are a few novels that students should be making sure they read during their time at school that can teach necessary life lessons.

Bossypants, Tina Fey

Besides from this being a book that will leave your mouth sore from smiling and laughing uncontrollably at Fey’s hysterical humor, you will learn a lot of valuable life lessons from this autobiography. Fey doesn’t only talk about her way to fame but also incorporates lessons about work, womanhood, strength, loss, and life. It’s a must-read for anyone who’s in or about to reach their 20’s.

He’s Just Not That Into You, Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo

Even if you’ve seen the movie remake, you need to pick up this novel. This book is a constant remind that no matter how badly you want it, no matter how much happiness you feel he will bring you, sometimes cliché’s are unfortunately true, and he’s just not that into you. This book will save you from wasting away your college years chasing a relationship that’s not even there. This book definitely proves an important lesson to learn during college.

The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald

The story depicts life of the upper class during the 1920’s telling the story of Jay Gatsby, a man who spends his entire life attempting to win a woman. This book is filled with lessons that should be heard at any age — If you haven’t already read this in high school, it’s time to finally jump on the bandwagon of the Gatsby phenomenon.

Looking for Alaska, John Green

A coming of age novel following the life of sixteen-year-old Miles Halter.  The novel is insightful, humorous, and honest. This is a book that focuses on finding oneself. It’s the journey of finding who you are and who you want to be, which is an important lesson for every college student to understand during that point in their lives.

How to Boil Water, Food Network Kitchens

It’s time to finally toss the leftover pizza and ramen and crack open this book and get a lesson to expand your horizons of what you can cook. There is more to food than placing it out of the fridge and into the microwave. This book will teach you everything you need to know about cooking. Trust me, you’ll thank me for it.
